Art and Design are integral parts of our curriculum. Pupils from Years 1 to 6 enjoy weekly lessons taught by experienced specialist teachers in our spacious, light-filled art studio overlooking Eccleston Square. The view is quite spectacular.
We believe that art plays a vital role in developing the ‘whole’ pupil and is crucial for nurturing minds beyond the classroom. Our culturally diverse curriculum celebrates artists, designers, and craftspeople from around the globe. We encourage all pupils to think outside the box when creating their own artistic outputs.
There is a strong focus on developing practical skills, boosting creativity, and establishing a sound understanding of visual elements. Eaton Square pupils have the opportunity to experiment with a broad range of media and processes, including Design Technology (DT) projects and modern tools like laser cutting. Through these experiences, pupils enhance their technical skills and develop resilience, learning to refine their ideas and overcome challenges.
Throughout the year, there are numerous opportunities to participate in internal and external competitions. The children’s artwork is proudly displayed across the school, showcasing their creativity and hard work.
Our most gifted pupils are invited to attend Scholarship Club to develop their portfolios for entrance into senior schools. Past alumni have gained scholarships and art exhibitions at prestigious schools such as Downe House, Emanuel School, Alleyn’s School, St Mary’s Calne, Queen’s Gate School, Roedean School, and Francis Holland. It is our continued commitment to bring out the best in all our pupils.
The creative arts are highly valued at Eaton Square. We encourage excellence in this area of the curriculum to allow children to explore their individuality, and build their self-confidence and resilience. Beyond lessons in stagecraft and performance skills, all classes perform at Whole School Assemblies held at St Michael’s Church. Additionally, there are numerous performing opportunities, from internal assemblies to formal musical concerts each term, and the highly-anticipated end-of-year production for Years 5 and 6.
Weekly Expressive Arts lessons provide opportunities to unpick and recreate scenes from stage and screen, focusing on clarity of diction, expression, and dramatic intention.
Pupils can take one-to-one, dedicated LAMDA tuition at school. Benefiting from its international recognition, pupils concentrate on the Communication and Presentation aspect of the LAMDA programme, working towards graded LAMDA qualifications. In individual sessions, pupils are introduced to various poetic styles and structures, practising key skills of intonation, expression, and voice moderation. They aim to recite a prepared piece of poetry during a public performance for teachers and parents. Pupils also learn the art of good conversation, discussing contemporary affairs and events in an engaging manner.
Empowering young people with transferable skills in performance and public speaking is invaluable. This not only reinforces memory skills and understanding of texts but also boosts strengths in speaking, self-presentation, and empathy.
Above all, Eaton Square aims to encourage and promote a shared enjoyment of singing, speaking, acting, and dancing on stage, contributing to a well-rounded curriculum.
Music is an integral part of the curriculum at Eaton Square. Every pupil receives a dedicated weekly music lesson led by a specialist music teacher, as well as an extra Choir session each week where children learn repertoire and develop their singing skills.
From Year 1 onwards, all children have the opportunity to sign up for extra one-to-one lessons with our incredible visiting music teachers. They can study piano, drumkit, violin, guitar, clarinet, and all other major orchestral instruments. These lessons take place during the school day in our dedicated music practice rooms.
We offer a range of clubs and ensembles, including a Woodwind Group, Cello Ensemble, and an auditioned Chamber Choir group for selected pupils in Years 5 and 6.
At the end of each term, there is a large-scale concert where all children participate. Many of our promising young musicians are given opportunities to perform solos or ensemble pieces. In the Summer Term, all Year 5 and 6 children prepare and perform a full-scale Musical Production. Past productions have included Aladdin, Bugsy Malone, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, and more.
In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, integrating technology into education is essential for equipping pupils with future-ready skills. At Eaton Square, we seamlessly incorporate cutting-edge digital tools across all stages of learning, ensuring each child develops a robust foundation in technology that will serve them for life.
Our comprehensive Computing curriculum is delivered through engaging weekly lessons, either in our state-of-the-art computing suite or directly in the classroom. With access to a range of devices – including desktops, laptops, and tablets – pupils explore the three core pillars of computing: computer science, information technology, and digital literacy.
From an early age, children engage in hands-on activities that deepen their understanding of how technology works. Through programming and coding with Bee-Bots, Pro-Bots, Scratch, HTML, and tools like Crumble and Micro:bits, they cultivate computational thinking and problem-solving skills. These foundational experiences empower them to express creativity and enhance learning across various subjects.
The cross-curricular applications of technology are limitless. Whether creating multimedia presentations on Ancient Rome, designing animations, developing websites, or investigating the history of the internet, our pupils embrace technology in ways that make learning dynamic and meaningful. Skills in digital communication, research, and multimedia creation become second nature, ensuring our pupils are not only tech-savvy but also able to use these tools to explore, innovate, and communicate effectively.
By Years 4 to 6, each pupil is equipped with their own Surface Go tablet, offering immediate access to digital resources to enrich classroom experiences in subjects ranging from creative writing and photography to film production and digital collaboration. We fully integrate platforms like Microsoft Teams and Atom Learning into both lessons and homework, fostering independent learning and collaboration.
One of our most exciting innovations is the Launch Pad—a fully interactive, immersive digital space unique to Eaton Square. In this pioneering environment, pupils can engage with our touch-sensitive LU Wall or explore the natural world with the interactive sandbox, enhancing their learning with technology that stimulates curiosity and creativity.
At Eaton Square, we are proud to lead the way in digital education, preparing our pupils not just for the future, but to shape it.
We aim to nurture a lifetime of enthusiasm and confidence through sport and physical activity. Our sporting ethos celebrates excellence, enjoyment, opportunity, and teamwork – both on and off the field.
Every pupil participates in at least two hours of PE per week, with access to our indoor facilities, as well as the state-of-the-art Queen Mother Sports Centre and Battersea Park Millennium Arena – both only moments from the school. Our vibrant programme teaches children the importance of positivity, fairness, and teamwork.
The younger year groups focus on ‘The ABCs’: agility, balance, and coordination. This is taught through activities such as gymnastics, team games, dance, and problem-solving exercises. These activities build a broad range of skills that aid children’s development in all areas of their lives, including resilience, confidence, social awareness, and fine and gross motor skills.
As pupils progress through the school, they have more opportunities to take part in new sports and compete in local, regional, and national competitions. We offer a wide range of PE activities, enabling pupils to experience and choose the sports they are best suited to:
This variety provides pupils with the firm foundations required for senior school.
During Games, pupils are taught core British sports in a co-educational environment. All children are encouraged to play each sport, developing a full range of movement patterns and muscle groups. As they progress, pupils can select which sports they would like to play each term:
Pupils, regardless of their talents, participate in fun, friendly matches against other schools and in larger regional and national tournaments hosted by IAPS and ISA. Each child also competes as a member of a House (Belgrave, Chester, Eaton, or Lowndes) in two whole school events each year: Swimming Gala and Sports Day. They also have the opportunity to compete in over sixteen House competitions throughout the year in various sports.
Swimming is a major strength of Eaton Square and has been for many years. Children start their swimming journey in Nursery, learning through play to feel confident and enjoy the water. This stage builds the essential foundations for progressing to the next level.
From Reception through to Year 6, pupils are grouped according to ability, ensuring that each child learns at their own pace. Our successful Swim Squad comprises three key groups. We run an annual swim tour to Tenerife where children train in an Olympic-sized pool to prepare for summer competitions.
The Eaton Square Swim Squad enjoys consistent success in events such as:
We also run the Eaton Square Swimming Club, where children train outside of school and compete against external swim clubs, consistently working towards county, regional, and national titles.
Clubs offer pupils the chance to explore new interests and uncover hobbies they might enjoy and want to pursue, adding variety to their education. At the beginning of each term, pupils can choose from a wide range of options such as:
Eaton Square participates in various indoor ski competitions organised by the National Schools Snow Sports Association, offering both novice and experienced skiers the chance to compete in a fun and challenging environment. Additionally, our more advanced skiers have the opportunity to showcase their skills at the IAPS National Ski Competition, held annually in Italy. There, pupils receive specialised race training from expert instructors, helping them prepare for a variety of competitive events.
