Miss Zanna’s Tips for Learning Development at Home

Here are a few ideas for how you can help your child’s learning and development at home!

Let your child build things with old cardboard boxes and (safe) recycling items. Talk together about what your child is building and why.

Give your child old clothes to dress up in, give them objects to encourage role play.

Encourage imaginative den making using old sheets and clothes.

Talk about what day of the week it is, what the weather is like, changes in season etc.

Talk about your plans for the day, and then discuss them at the end of the day, what did your child or like/dislike? Why did you do certain activities?

Read a recipe together, as you bake allow your child to help measure out the ingredients, practise stirring, use cookie cutters etc.

Play counting games and sing counting rhyming games.

Supply a craft box and let your child choose to make something using boxes, coloured paper, tissue paper and glue.

Allow your child to be as independent as possible – dressing, undressing, putting their coat and shoes on etc.

Let your child help you with chores, such as helping to lay the table, watering the plants, putting the washing up away or tidying up.

Ask questions as you read a story together – why has something happened? What are your child’s thoughts? How could the story end?

These are just a few ways you can keep the minds of your young ones active during the isolation period, we hope you find them to be useful!
