Digestion Investigation

This half-term Year 6 are learning about nutrition, digestion and excretion of humans and other animals. They began the topic learning about balanced diets and what happens if we eat too much or too little of particular nutrients.

They then learnt that owls eat their prey whole, including bones and fur. Owls then regurgitate these back up in the form of owl pellets. Last week, they dissected real barn owl pellets and found the remains of different rodents which could not be digested.

The barn owl pellets were sourced from the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary and we are very grateful for their support in this project. The pupils had a great time dissecting them with tweezers and cocktail sticks, finding the remains of mice, rats, voles and shrews.
